Lesson 10 - “Calling on Gods That Cannot Answer”

Pastor Frank Cuozzo

Habakkuk 2:18-20, “What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.”

We’re continuing our series on the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk. God was not only going to judge the nation of Israel because of her backsliding, but He was also going to judge Babylon as well for the great wickedness and sin of this former great national power.

King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians had great pride in what they had accomplished as a nation. In Habakkuk’s day, Babylon became known as the strongest nation in all of the world. The problem was that they had accomplished all of that by destroying everything and everyone that got in their way. In Habakkuk 2:19, God pronounces the fifth of five “Woes” against Babylon and says, “Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach!”

God was going to pronounce judgment on the Babylonians for many things but one of them we are looking at today is calling on false gods of wood and stone; gods that cannot answer. I’m so glad that we serve a living God Who can and does answer our prayers amen? We serve the God of Jeremiah 33:3 which says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Our once great nation of America has become a garden of strange gods. It has been reported that as many as 800 non-conventional religions are now being practiced in America. America has moved from an age of materialistic thinking where all that mattered was money and things and into an age of mysticism. The materialism of the West has met the mysticism of the East. Some years ago it was described as the New Age movement but it is actually nothing more than a revival of what Babylon and other heathen peoples have been practicing for many centuries with no knowledge of the true God.

This increasing Heathenism in America and the problem that the Babylonians had was that people were putting their trust in things that cannot really help them. No matter how sincere our confidence and trust in those things, people are calling on god that can never answer. God pronounced a “WOE” judgment upon Babylon for this type of false worship. What the Babylonians and others are doing in American is called Idolatry.

Idolatry simply defined is worshipping the creature instead of the Creator. It is worshipping what has been created instead of the One who created it! God pronounced judgment upon Babylon and said in Isaiah 47:11, “Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth.” The destruction of Babylon happened when the invading Medes and Persians diverted the Euphrates River and came into the banquet hall where King Belshazzar was having a feast with 1,000 of his lords and were in a drunken stupor and did not know what was happening to them until the very hand of God wrote on the wall, “Thou are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.” (Daniel 5:27)

God also said in Isaiah 47:11, “And mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. Stand now with thine enchantments.” After God said that He would judge Babylon and bring them down, He told them to call on their enchantments, their strange gods.

Isaiah 47:12-13 God continues and says, “Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.”

God was saying to them and he says to us today, “See if the horoscope can help you, and see if the astrologists can save you or the Tarrot card readers or palm readers can help you!” When people read the paper to see if the horoscope is good to tell them their next move, they are doing the very same thing that the Babylonians did. They are calling on gods that cannot answer.

The Babylonians made a god out of everything in sight and God was going to judge them because they gave all the credit for their power and glory to false gods of wood and stone; God’s that could not answer them. The Bible says in Psalm 115:3-9, “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.”

The first commandment that God gave to Moses was this from Exodus 20:2-6, “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”

God will not share His glory with anyone or anything! Never! He is God and He alone is worthy of our worship and praise amen? We need a revival in our land of old fashioned Christian living where believers honor and glorify the Lord and let God be God. One of the reasons that people today our worshipping false gods and gods that cannot answer them is because the true and living God has not been allowed to work in the lives of believers. When we grow cold and anemic in our Christian lives it creates a vacuum in our nation that allows false heathen religions and gods to move in.

When you read in the Old Testament about pagan temples being built and being filled with the heathen rejoicing and glorifying their gods for giving them prosperity and victory, you find out that it happened because God’s people were not living for Him and glorifying Him.

As believers in the One and only God, we need to have a strong relationship with God and it must be lived out in our daily lives so that the unbelieving will see that there is a difference between us and them and it’s because of God’s presence and power in our lives. The New Testament church turned the world upside down, not because they had some special power of their own, but because of God’s power working through them.

In closing, read entire chapter of Acts chapter three and then the first four verses of Acts chapter four and close in prayer.
