Lesson 03
Introduction: “Keys in dealing with Cults favorite passages”

-Use the right Bible. (KJV)

-If you are caught off guard and attempt to use their Bible it probably will not say the same thing that your Bible says.

-Some groups, especially the Jehovah’s Witness’, have their own translation of Scripture (New World Translation) that helps to verify their teachings. Be assured the translation is faulty, and the undeniable historical evidence exposes the fact that their translation was intentionally manipulated to substantiate their false doctrine.

-Always consider the immediate context of the passage they are using. You can make any verse say anything by itself. However, every verse has a context that will limit its interpretation. Most cults take Scripture out of its context. -Do not be caught off guard because of tunnel vision. In other words don’t be shaken by a phrase that you might not understand within itself. Remember to look at the surrounding verses. Context is king!

-Do not use unclear passages to interpret clear passages.       If you are not sure about a passage begin with what you know. Do not simply make things up as you go along. No human with a mortal mind will be able to understand everything all of the time from a divine Book. However, it should be very easy to identify what a passage does not mean if you are familiar with the clear statements of Scripture.        Remember, all Scripture is clear. Any lack of clarity is because of our inadequacies not because of God. The answer is there.

-You must be a student of the Bible. Look at what II Timothy 2:14-26 says about God’s Word and those who try to pervert it. “Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”

-Always remember that the gospel is the “power of God unto salvation.” (Rom. 1:16) Do not go looking for an argument and miss an opportunity to give the gospel to these lost souls. Usually cult groups that you might confront are in pairs. The main “speaker” might not be convinced of the truth of God’s Word; however, there may be a “newer convert” listening that might benefit from what you have said. Allow God’s Spirit to lead you and be prayed up before and after you talk with these people.

Jesus told His disciples as He sent them out in Mark 6:10-11, “And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.”
